December 2008
  • MDS Pharma Services President Dave Spaight was quoted in the December 8, 2008 article about meeting patient recruitment challenges in the Philadelphia Business Journal. MDS Pharma Services was the only contract research organization (CRO) mentioned in the article, published in a key business publication in MDS Pharma Services' headquarters city. The article noted the innovative approach we are taking to recruit U.S. Alzheimer's patients for a Toyama study. In addition, it referenced the growing trend of conducting clinical trails in emerging regions and cites our new facility in Singapore. "MDS Pharma Services has long recognized the importance of investing in the Asia-Pacific region," Dave said in the article. "Our move to a new laboratory facility in Singapore, which is becoming a hub of drug development activity, is a testament to our commitment to growing across Asia."
  • In its December 12 edition, ClinPage covered the important milestone achieved by MDS Pharma Services and Daiichi Sankyo Pharma Development: the completion of 100 Phase I clinical studies at MDS Pharma Services Neptune, New Jersey facility.
November 2008
  • Fred Pritchard, vice president of Drug Development, Development & Regulatory Services, was quoted in the cover story of the November 2008 10th-anniversary issue of Drug Discovery & Development, which showcased expert predictions on the future of drug discovery and development. He said: "Maintaining scientific teams long enough to produce meaningful work could be a challenge, because new drugs and technologies can require several years of effort by highly skilled scientists and engineers before success is realized. Development and regulatory services companies that can maintain a stable R&D work force will have the best chance to succeed."
October 2008
  • In October, Canada News Wire carried a news release about MDS Pharma Services newly expanded Global Central Lab facility in Singapore, which will enable us to better meet the current and emerging needs of clients in the Asia-Pacific region. Thanks to an improved layout and workflow, the new facility has twice the previous capacity for sample storage, processing and safety testing. PharmaTimes and BioSpectrum Asia Edition also reported on this expansion in October.
  • MDS Pharma Services' Patrice Hugo, vice president - Scientific Affairs, Global Central Lab, is among the scientific experts interviewed for an article about biomarkers in Clinical Discovery, published on October 13. In part, Patrice said: "Biomarkers are included in clinical trials for several reasons - to increase the scientific knowledge about a drug, its target and mechanism of action, to better predict safety issues, to identify responder from non- or poor-responder patients, and to minimize trial size through accurate inclusion and exclusion criteria. The ultimate aim is to increase the probability of demonstrating clinical benefit and receive regulatory approval for the drug." MDS Pharma Services was the only contract research organization mentioned in the article, which also included input from experts at Schering-Plough, Novartis and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Biomarkers Consortium
  • Many media outlets, including PharmaLive, CBC, Life Science Weekly, Biotech Business Week, Yahoo, European Pharma Review and Pharma Business Week covered MDS Pharma Services success at the Good Clinical Practice journal (GCPj) Awards event in London, England, in October. MDS Pharma Services captured prizes for superior clinical-trial management, specifically Data Management Team of the Year and Project Manager of the Year. We were also finalists in the Clinical Research Team of the Year and Most Innovative Patient Recruitment Strategy categories. These achievements exemplify our commitment to client service and high-quality on-time planning and execution of clinical research.
  • In October, PharmaLive reported that Exco InTouch, a provider of patient communication solutions for the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, had come second at the 2008 Good Clinical Practice journal (GCPj) Awards in the category of Most Innovative Patient Recruitment Strategy. MDS Pharma Services' Phase I clinic in Belfast, Northern Ireland, uses the Exco InTouch text messaging system to recruit participants, often on short deadlines, helping us to keep our brand promise of Quality on Time™.
  • PharmaLive also reported in October that MDS Pharma Services is taking unique steps to recruit patients for the Kioku Study™, a Phase IIa study for a drug being developed by Japan's Toyama Chemical Co. Ltd. to treat Alzheimer's disease. MDS Pharma Services encouraged participating medical practices to attend local Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk events to distribute information about the study. This is Toyama's first late-stage clinical research project in the United States, and MDS Pharma Services is committed to initiating the study on time with a full panel of qualified participants.
September 2008
  • The hiring of Ross Tonkens as MDS Pharma Services vice president - Medical Affairs has been featured in more than 30 publications, including the September issue of European Pharmaceutical Review, the October issue of Good Clinical Practice journal, the November PharmaVOICE, Drug Week (September 12), Biotech Week (September 10) and Outsourcing Pharma (September 9).
  • Also in September, Karen Hahn, MDS Pharma Services Clinical Operations manager and head of Office, Global Clinical Development in Mexico, was quoted in PharmaExec in a special report on CROs in Mexico.
  • PharmaVOICE covered the hiring of Bernard Tisserand and Jonny Salyer as executive medical directors, bolstering MDS Pharma Services expertise and experience in the areas of respiratory diseases and metabolic disorders.
  • MDS Pharma Services President Dave Spaight was interviewed for a profile of our business unit that appeared in the September issue of R&D Directions, the publication's annual contract research organization (CRO) issue.
August 2008
  • Javier Revuelta, senior director, head of Clinical Operations for Europe & Asia, was quoted in the lead story of the August 2008 issue of CenterWatch Monthly, which was about conducting clinical trials in Central and Eastern Europe. He spoke about the importance of having a presence in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, so that studies for seasonal diseases, such as influenza and respiratory allergies, can be carried out year round. He also shared his opinion on the need for a good reputation and professional relationships.
  • In addition, Javier's presentation on feasibility studies at the DIA show in June precipitated an interview request from ClinPage.com and a resultant article in August.
  • On August 19, Marketwatch quoted MDS Pharma Services President Dave Spaight in his role as chair of the Association of Clinical Research Organizations (ACRO), as Dave welcomed Clinilabs and ReSearch Pharmaceutical Services (RPS) as new member companies of ACRO, as well as Daniel Perlman, chairman and CEO of RPS, as a board member. ACRO represents the clinical research organization industry to regulators, biopharmaceutical clients, policy makers and the public in the United States and worldwide.
July 2008
  • MDS and Anita O'Connor, senior director for Biopharmaceutical Development in Development & Regulatory Services, are featured prominently throughout the cover story of the July 2008 issue of R&D Directions, which is focused on biogenerics, and in a sidebar on the impact on CROs.
  • In its July 14 edition, Biotech Business Week reported on the publication of research from MDS Pharma Services in the area of pharmacodynamics. The original report, "Pharmacodynamic Equivalence of Two Orlistat Capsule Formulations in Healthy Volunteers Under Fed Conditions," was published in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
  • The July 21 issue of CenterWatch Weekly included a brief Page 2 item on the ClinQuick® enhancement and the opening of our new office in Tokyo, Japan.
  • Also in July, PharmaLive, Canadian Business Online, OutsourcingPharma, Biotech Business Week and several other news outlets reported the launch of MDS Pharma Services' "next generation" proprietary ClinQuick® electronic system for Phase I study setup, data capture, project tracking and management.
  • PharmaTimes, in its July 16 edition, noted that our new office in Tokyo will enable MDS Pharma Services to "better to serve the local pharmaceutical and biotechnology markets as well as open up new growth opportunities both in Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific region." They also reported on our newly enhanced ClinQuick® software.
  • Many publications covered the news of the MDS restructuring in July, including Outsourcing Pharma, The Ottawa Sun, The National Post, The Globe and Mail, Reuters Canada, CTV, The Toronto Star, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Lincoln Journal Star, The Ottawa Citizen and The Gazette.
June 2008
  • In June, Outsourcing Pharma and Lab Technologist reported on the expansion of MDS Pharma Services' portfolio of bioanalytical testing services with the addition of electrochemiluminescent assay (ECLA) capability, used to test biological samples from clinical research participants.
  • In an article about CRO central lab expansions, Contract Pharma in June ran a photo of MDS Pharma Services' new Beijing, China, lab, and mentioned us as a player in this arena. The issue also featured an article on CRO expansion in Asia, including quotes from Jason Chang, clinical operations manager at our Global Clinical Development office in Beijing.
May 2008
  • In May, ebiz reported that MDS Pharma Services had selected the IBM Cognos Now! product to track and analyze sales performance across our lines of business.
  • In May, Outsourcing Pharma featured an article about the appointment of Bernard Tisserand and Jonny Salyer as executive medical directors, bolstering MDS Pharma Services' clout in the areas of respiratory diseases and metabolic disorders.
  • MDS Pharma Services was well represented in patient recruitment stories in the May issue of R&D Directions magazine. QingAn Jiao and Silvia Zieher of Global Clinical Development are quoted and pictured in two articles dealing with patient recruitment challenges and opportunities in China and Latin America.
April 2008
  • An article on biosimilars by Suzanne Sensabaugh, vice president of Biopharmaceutical Development, was featured in the April 2008 issue of the European BioPharmaceutical Review. In the piece, she examines the increased activity in the United States in the past year in bringing similar biological medicinal products, or "biosimilars," to patients in need.
  • International Clinical Trials featured an article on Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs) by Dr. Gurdyal Kalsi, senior pharmaceutical physician, in its April 2008 issue. The article covers the need for DMCs, as well as the guidelines for establishing and managing these important independent bodies, which are responsible for protecting patients participating in a trial setting and upholding scientific credibility for the conduct of an experiment.
  • The April 2008 edition of the European Pharmaceutical Contractor magazine featured an article on Thorough QT Studies co-authored by Bill Wheeler, medical director for our Centralized Cardiac Services group in Global Central Lab; Joy Olbertz, director ­ Cardiac Safety Services, Early Clinical Research; and Benoit Tyl, senior cardiologist and European medical director for our Global Central Lab line of business. The article examines the practical considerations of executing a Thorough QT/QTc study, with emphasis on the importance of decreasing variability.
  • In April 2008, PharmaLive and Contract Pharma were two of a number of media outlets that picked up our press release on the recent appointments of Teresa Winslow as senior vice president, Global Business Development, and James Miskel as vice president, Strategy and Corporate Development.
March 2008
  • The March 2008 edition of Future Pharmaceuticals included an interview with MDS Pharma Services President Dave Spaight on the Apollo study management system used in our Global Central Lab line of business. In the interview, Dave discusses the innovative Web-based system, which gives clients access to study data any time, anywhere.
February 2008
